Official Obituary of
PAUL RANDOLPH MEHNE
May 27, 1948 - September 14, 2015
Paul R. Mehne, 67, of Havertown, PA, died on September 14, 2015, at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He was the husband of Carol A. (Starner) Mehne. Born in Wilmington, DE, he was the son of Paul H. and the late Doris (Longfritz) Mehne of Mendenhall, PA. Paul graduated from Kennett High School in Kennett Square, PA, in 1966 and received bachelor of science (1970) and PhD (1976) degrees in environmental science and curriculum development from Syracuse University and the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega and Alpha Omega Alpha fraternities. His academic career as a medical educator began in 1975 at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC, where he was an assistant professor in the School of Allied Health and later associate dean for student affairs and medical informatics at the Brody School of Medicine. In 1989, he returned to the Philadelphia area and was associate dean for student and house staff affairs at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. In 1992, Paul served as associate dean for academic and student affairs at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, NJ, and later moved to the school's Camden campus as associate dean, retiring in 2007. He was active in the Association of American Medical Colleges, where he chaired its Group on Regional Medical Campuses in 2005-06. Paul was the recipient of several awards and grants in telemedicine and medical informatics, but his greatest career legacy is the thousands of students he guided through medical school to serve in many areas of health care. He was especially interested in primary care and family medicine, in preparing future physicians in best practices for communicating with patients and their families, and in bringing affordable health care services to underserved populations. Paul is survived by his wife Carol; father Paul H.; daughter Meredith Mehne, husband Brian Yowell, grandson Sawyer and step grandsons Landen and Tucker Yowell of Missoula, MT; daughter Amy Sanitate, husband Vito and granddaughter Noelle of Havertown; his mother in law Grace Barney of Havertown; brother Robert A. Mehne and wife Katie of Sycamore, IL; nephew Jeffrey Mehne and wife Kate, great nephew Max and great niece Zoey of Kalamazoo, MI; brother in law Thomas Starner and wife Patti of Philadelphia; niece Nina Starner and partner Jake Robbins of Philadelphia; and extended family and friends. His father in law, Kent Barney, preceded him in death. Paul was an avid hiker, mountain climber, environmentalist, computer enthusiast, and photographer. He shared these interests with his loving daughters, his family, and many coworkers and colleagues. A memorial service will be held from 1 to 4 pm on Sunday, November 29, at the Haverford Township Community Recreation and Environmental Center, 9000 Parkview Drive, Haverford, PA, 19041. Memorial contributions in Paul's name can be made to the Glacier Institute, 137 Main Street, Kalispell, MT 59901; the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, PO Box 807, Harper's Ferry, WV 25425-0807; the Good Shepherd Preschool (for the Paul R.
